Bucking stock of the Wrangler NFR

For the second time in three years, Frontier Rodeo''s Delta Ship was named the Wrangler NFR Bareback Horse of the Year, wrapping up a remarkable year of achievement for the Winnie, Texas-based stock contractors. Frontier had the PRCA Bareback Horse of the Year (Full Baggage) and PRCA Saddle Bronc Horse of the Year (Medicine Woman) this year, the first time one company had swept those two awards.

Miller moves into steer wrestling average lead

Steer wrestler Jason Miller moved into the average lead when he won his third round of the week in front of 17,558 fans Thursday night at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Miller of Lance Creek, Wyo., topped Round 8 with a 3.9-second run that was one-tenth of a second faster than Billy Bugenig and Mickey Gee. Miller has failed to place just once – in Round 6 – at the Finals as he moved to second in the world standings. He trails California bulldogger Luke Branquinho by just $9,659 in the world standings with two rounds to go.

Muncy shows world championship form in Round 7

New Mexico cowboy Taos Muncy turned in the best regular season of his career, but he had mustered only a split of third and two fourth-place checks in the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo’s first six rounds. The 2007 world champion changed that on Wednesday when he rode Korkow Rodeos’ Blew Apart for 86.5 points to win Round 7 in front of 17,180 fans at the Thomas & Mack Center. The win moved him from third to second in the pivotal average race and pushed his Finals earnings to $41,971.

Resistol Bull Riding Rookie of the Year Chandler Bownds celebrated twice in front of 17,277 fans on Tuesday night at the Thomas and Mack Center. The Lubbock, Texas, cowboy turned in an 89-point ride on Rookie Night at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo to win Round 6 and move to fifth in the world standings. It’s been feast or famine for Bownds, who won Round 2 with a 91-point ride on Robinson Pro Rodeo’s RMEF Bugle and won on Tuesday, but failed to make the eight-second whistle in the other four rounds.

The annual Exceptional Rodeo was held in the Thomas & Mack arena this morning, bringing together more than 40 Wrangler NFR contestants with special needs children for rodeo instruction and fun. Powell, Johnson celebrating personal bests at WNFR

It’s only fitting that on Tough Enough to Wear Pink night at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, cancer-survivor Jhett Johnson took a victory lap. Teamed with header Turtle Powell, the duo turned in a 3.8-second run to win Round 5 in front of 17,242 fans on Monday at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Brazile clinched his record ninth world all-around championship and his 16thgold buckle overall – which ties him with Jim Shoulders for second all-time in ProRodeo history. Since the regular season ended on Sept. 30, he has been thinking constantly about joining his ProRodeo Hall of Fame and five-time World Champion father, Lewis Feild, in the gold buckle club. After a season in which he won more than $140,000 and carried the world standings lead into the 53rd Wrangler National Finals Rodeo at the Thomas & Mack Center, Feild took yet another step toward his goal with an 89-point ride aboard Bar T Rodeo’s Bitter Robin.

Crash Cooper has been named the barrelman for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, becoming the first Canadian to fill that role in the rodeo’s 53 years. "I laughed when I heard that it was only going to be myself and barrel racer Lindsay Sears representing Canada at the NFR this year,” Cooper said. “I’m sure all of the rodeo fans at home in Canada are proud; both of their representatives will be wearing makeup at the NFR."

Las Vegas Events (LVE) announced today the start times for the 2011 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, scheduled for Dec. 1 -10 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. The Sunday, Dec. 4 performance will now start at 12:45 p.m. (PT) to accommodate the running of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon and Half Marathon at night under the lights of the Las Vegas Strip. Online ticket exchange launched for WNFR

Las Vegas Events (LVE) and PrimeSport have announced the launch of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo Official Online Ticket Exchange. This new service will become the official marketplace to source and purchase tickets for every session of the rodeo. At the culmination of the rodeo season, the top 15 contestants in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing and bull riding qualify to compete at the Wrangler NFR. Herriman loses battle with cancer at 59

Glenn Clay Herriman, owner of the Northern Cross Rodeo Company, died Dec. 11 at his home in Omak, Wash., surrounded by his family, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. He was 59.

The second annual PRCA Permit Holder of the Year Challenge was held during the Benny Binion’s World Famous Bucking Horse & Bull Sale at the South Point Hotel, Spa & Casino’s Equestrian Center, Dec. 4-5, with PRCA permit holders competing for cash and prizes. Bull rider J.W. Harris clinched his third consecutive world championship in Round 9 of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, Dec. 10 in Las Vegas. The Mullin, Texas, cowboy mathematically secured the gold buckle by finishing second in the round with an 89.5-score on Four L & Diamond S Rodeo’s Insaniac. He is the first bull rider since Don Gay, from 1979-81, to win three straight. Harris also is assured to break B.J. Schumacher’s WNFR earnings record of $142,644, set in 2006.
Willy to retire after Round 10 of WNFR

Legendary Canadian steer wrestling horse, Rtr Little Willy, is being retired from competition at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, Dec. 11 in Las Vegas after carrying four cowboys to world titles – Rope Myers (2001), Lee Graves (2005), Jason Miller (2007) and Luke Branquinho (2008). Willy was voted the PRCA/AQHA Steer Wrestling Horse of the Year in 2008. Willy, 24, is owned by Greg Cassidy, of Donalda, Alberta, and being ridden in some rounds by his sons, Curtis and Cody. Curtis, aboard Willy, split the Round 9 win in 3.6 seconds with Dean Gorsuch.

ProRodeo League of Women raises $100,000 for JCCF

A fashion show and luncheon is a light-hearted way to spend an afternoon during the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. However, the event annually raises a lot of money for an important cause. This year''s, Sequins, Spurs & Stilettos ProRodeo League of Women Fashion Show raised $100,000 for the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund. It is the largest fundraiser of the year for the JCCF, which financially assists contestants injured while competing.

I can’t express the thanks and gratitude that I have received from family, friends and fans. I received overwhelming support from thousands of people. After my accident, it made me realize even more what is truly important in life. We always talk about the danger factor in our sport and we see the occasional wreck or injury and then when it strikes you, the reality of it all sets in. As a rodeo athlete we learn to be prepared for any circumstance including injury. But the key to happiness I’ve learned is not letting your circumstances determine your joy or happiness.

It is Tough Enough to Wear Pink Night in the Thomas & Mack Center, part of a continuing effort to bring the sport of professional rodeo and the Western community together to rally against breast cancer. Since its inception in 2004, TETWP has empowered rodeos and Western events in the U.S. and Canada to focus attention on the need for a cure. To date, the campaign has raised nearly $9 million for breast cancer charities, much of which stays in the community. The national anthem will be sung by Pat Boone, and Charlie Daniels is the opening act. The performance sponsor tonight is Montana Silversmiths.

The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) announced today its 2011 television schedule, featuring Great American Country (GAC) as the new home of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. GAC, which is available in nearly 60 million households nationwide, will also become the home of the PRCA Seminole Hard Rock Xtreme Bulls Tour, presented by B&W Trailer Hitches, and the PRCA’s championship rodeos.

WNFR bullfighters receive bonus

The fifteen bull riders competing at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo collected money and put it together to give it to bullfighters Dusty Tuckness, Darrell Diefenbach and Kenny Bergeron. The bull riders donated a total of $12,000 of their own money, so they could give each bullfighter $4,000 apiece on top of the money they are receiving to work at the rodeo, Dec. 2-11. The bullfighters work to protect the cowboys from being injured while competing. “It’s what they do for us all year round,” bull rider Dustin Elliott said.

PRCA cowboys and contract personnel joined WPRA barrel racers as they hosted between 35-40 students with special needs from three schools at the Exceptional Rodeo, Dec. 6 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Among the cowboys in attendance were tie-down roper and Round 3 winner Tuf Cooper, as well as steer wrestler Matt Reeves, who had just picked up a victory in Round 4 last night. All three of this year''s Wrangler NFR bullfighters - Kenny Bergeron, Darrell Diefenbach and Dusty Tuckness - were also in attendance.

Dent’s traveling partner, Ryan Gray, sustained a lacerated liver last night when a bucking horse stepped on him, and he is now out of the competition. Gray encouraged Dent to win a world title since he can’t.

Trevor Brazile and partner Patrick Smith finished third in the team roping in Round 1 of the Wrangler NFR and earned $10,451 apiece. Brazile now has a lead of $169,401 over second-place Curtis Cassidy in the all-around world standings as he seeks to break the record he now shares with Ty Murray by winning an eighth all-around gold buckle. It is mathematically possible that Brazile can clinch tonight. That lead is $20,000 more than anyone has ever earned at an NFR and Brazile is qualified in team roping and tie-down roping, while Cassidy is only qualified in steer wrestling. As practical matter, it is over now.

The Third Annual Gold Buckle Gala was held on Nov. 29 at the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa Ballroom in Las Vegas. This year’s event honored Eight-time World Champion and Hall of Famer Larry Mahan as a Legend of ProRodeo. The event also signified festivities for the 2010 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo have begun. The $5.875 million event runs Dec. 2-11 at the Thomas & Mack Center on the UNLV campus. The Wrangler NFR will feature 119 of ProRodeo’s best in pursuit of the event-winner’s gold buckle, along with some of the record purse.

Well guys, here comes the second blog of my career. I am happy and proud to say it’s coming from the suite I was blessed to receive from the MGM Grand. It’s amazing it is so comfortable and really user-friendly and it makes it that much easier to focus the task at hand! The drive to Las Vegas from Sulphur, La., felt like it took three weeks because I was so excited to be going. It only really took about 24 hours. My great friend Corde Skinner, cousin Ross Beasley and me embarked on the drive at about 10 p.m. Central Time on Friday night (Nov. 26), we arrived in Vegas at about 11.
